Dan Cardinal McCartney (he/they) is an interdisciplinary visual artist based in Calgary, Alberta.
He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing from Alberta University of the Arts. Dan belongs to the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation with family ties to the Mikisew Cree and Métis from Fort Chipewyan. His paternal side are settlers based in the Treaty 8 region. He was born and raised in foster care in Fort McMurray. As a Two Spirit transgender artist, Dan explores themes of intergenerational trauma and ancestral resiliency through mixed-media collage, painting, moving images, and performance.
Notable exhibitions include "Fix your hearts or die" at the Alberta Gallery of Art and "let's talk about sex, bb" at Agnes Etherington Arts Centre. In 2021, he received the William & Meredith Saunderson Prize from The Hnatyshyn Foundation. Upcoming projects feature a solo exhibition in 2025 in the Marvin Frances Media Gallery at Urban Shaman Gallery in collaboration with the National Indigenous Media Arts Coalition, and a duo exhibition at Artspace Peterborough.
Dan is currently working as a Co-Director at Stride Gallery in Calgary, Alberta, and is also a Core Member of the Ociciwan Contemporary Art Centre in Edmonton, Alberta.
